Community Help from the Churches in San Francisco

The coalition came into existence in January 2019, intending to help the African-American community with issues like hunger, chronic health conditions, and unemployment through church help.

Introduction, Background, & History

A grant from Meta Fund helped set in motion the African-American faith community with a vision to improve the health and well-being of the community. The key issues came into light after the pastors of 16 churches in San Francisco’s District 10 were convened.

  • Pastors didn’t know where to go to get help for their people.
  • They stated that our Public Health Dept didnʹt communicate with their organizations.
  • It was also stated that they didnʹt communicate well with each other to share information.
  • They also said there was a lack of support for faith‐based organizations.

SFDPH Support

  • Sixteen congregations were surveyed about food insecurity.
  • 17 liaisons from the various churches met every month, beginning in 2017 at Delaware River Basin Commission.
  • The meeting was held to learn more about and connect with the available health resources in the community.
  • At least 10 hours of technical assistance for the sessions was provided by SFDPH Backbone Support.

Coalition Moving Forward

In January 2019, the San Francisco African American Faith‐Based Coalition identified themselves as one of those who seek to leverage spiritual optimism (faith) and a fundamental necessity (food) as stepping stones for improving the health and wellbeing of D10 congregations and the greater community city‐wide.

The Liaisons or Faith representatives will be responsible for identifying and providing food to those at‐risk for immediate and systemic hunger, and linking those identified to other support services deemed to improve health and wellbeing in the community.
